"The event which stands out most clearly concerning my years at University of Michigan was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. My parents happened to be in Michigan at the time and we had gone to Greenfield Village for a day’s outing. It was there that we learned via loudspeaker of the president’s death. The news cast a pall over events of the next few days when we spent much of out time glued to the television set to learn what was occurring in Washington.

On campus the atmosphere was quite different from the usual hustle and bustle of students along the diagonal. I don’t remember whether or not classes were canceled but I do recall going with crowds of other Michigan students and faculty to Hill Auditorium where the university’s memorial service for President Kennedy was held.

President Kennedy was to have been speaker at the May 23, 1964 graduation ceremony. President Lyndon B. Johnson took his place and on that occasion delivered his famous Great Society speech. Seeing the president’s helicopters circle the stadium and then alight made for an exciting beginning to a great occasion. Being on the same stage with the President of the United States made this, the most important day of my life, even more memorable."
