True Blue Alumni Weekend

No doubt about it, our True Blue Alumni Weekend just wouldn’t be the same without you.

Make plans now to return to Ann Arbor on September 28—29 for the first of several special events being held in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the School of Information. Events will continue until spring 2002.

Friday’s festivities are geared for fun and enrichment, with a special panel of past and present deans offering their insights about what it’s like to lead faculty and students. That will be followed by a special lecture featuring Rick Weingarten of the American Library Association. The lecture is under the auspices of the William Warner Bishop and Martha Boaz lecture funds. Bishop was director of the University Library from 1915-41 and was the first chair of the Department of Library Science. Boaz (AMLS ’50, Ph.D. ’55) was the first woman to receive a doctorate in library science at U-M. She later became dean of the University of Southern California library program.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
Except for the dinner, all Friday events are in the Alumni Center Founders Room (East Washington and Fletcher) and reservations are not required. An RSVP is required for the dinner.

1—2:30 p.m.
"From the Inner Sanctum: Our Deans Tell All!"
The past meets the present as SI deans take center stage and present the highlights – and foibles – of their deanship. Hear Russell E. Bidlack, Robert M. Warner, Daniel E. Atkins, Gary M. Olson, and John L. King in this engaging and witty conversation.

3—4:30 p.m.
"Riding the Third Wave:Policy Lessons from the Information Revolution"
Rick Weingarten will deliver the first William Warner Bishop—Martha Boaz Lecture. Weingarten is director of the Office for Information Technology Policy of the American Library Association. A reception will follow.

7—9 p.m.
Dining with the Deans!
You’re invited to dine with the deans and other special guests. Location will be announced with your confirmation. An RSVP is required for this event, and there is a $30 charge. Please call (734) 763-2281 for reservations and other information.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER, 29
All Saturday events will be in the School of Information (South University and East University Avenues). No reservations are required, except for the lunch.

9 a.m.—Noon
Alumni Society Membership and Board Meeting
All alumni are invited to attend. Your hosts will be Margaret Taylor (Ph.D. ’82) and Christine Lind Hage (AMLS ’71).

12:30—2 p.m.
Emeritus Luncheon
The School of Information will honor members of the 1940 and ’41 classes. Alumnus Forrest Carhart (ABLS ’41; AMLS ’43) will host this special lunch and invites all alumni to come share their favorite Michigan memories in an informal setting. Every effort will be made to seat members of classes together. The lunch is free for members of the 1940 and ’41 classes and $20 for all others. An RSVP is required; please call (734) 763-2281 for reservations.
