Assistant Professor in Information Systems


The Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the Information Systems area, to begin July 1, 1997, subject to fiscal approval. The Faculty, recently lauded by external reviewers as having, "a cutting edge master's program, a highly regarded doctoral program, a comprehensive continuing education program, laudable research productivity, and first-class faculty-student relations", is well-positioned for the future with streams in Archives, Information Systems, and Library and Information Science, with dynamic partnerships with the Knowledge Media Design Institute, the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology, and other University-wide interdisciplinary collaborative programs, and with a strategic plan to develop a strong program in telematics.

Responsibilities:

Recognizing the Faculty's commitment to excellence and innovation within a user-focused framework, the preferred candidate will have a research specialization and strong teaching competence in at least one of the following areas: telecommunications and networks; web-based technologies; database design; the design and evaluation of state-of-the-art information retrieval systems. The successful applicant's research agenda will promote the Faculty's reputation as a leading-edge and internationally prominent research-intensive faculty in Information Studies. The candidate will be expected to teach the Introduction to Information Technologies, and may participate in team instruction in one of four core courses. In addition to research and teaching, duties will include supervision of research at the Master's and Doctoral levels.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a doctorate or equivalent in information studies, information systems/computer science, or a related field, and should have proven ability in, or the potential for, excellent research and effective teaching. Applicants whose doctorate is near completion will also be considered; in such cases, initial appointment is that of lecturer. In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
