The University of Denver is one of the major, private, doctorate-granting institutions between Chicago and the west coast. Since its founding in 1864, the University has demonstrated the flexibility of its independent status by providing high-quality liberal arts instruction while responding to the needs of Denver and the West through an innovative variety of applied and professional programs.
University College is an academic unit of the University of Denver offering masters degree programs, certificate programs, and classes which are designed specifically for adult students. It exemplifies the University of Denver traditions of excellence and service to the community by providing quality continuing and advanced education for the intellectual enrichment and professional advancement of adult students. Its nontraditional degree programs offer a course of study which is flexibly structured to meet the needs of an adult and working student population. Most often accommodations are introduced in terms of time, location, or format, for example, with courses noffered over an extended period, in time slots outside the regular weekday work week, or in concentrated blocks of time during the summer or throughout the academic year. They may be offered in innovative formats, sometimes taking advantage of advanced technologies. Practicing professionals are extensively used as adjunct faculty to incorporate practical knowledge and skills with the theoretical foundation of the disciplines.
The Library and Information Services Program offered its first classes in the Fall 1995 Quarter and was accepted into candidacy status for ALA accreditation in July 1996. The program plans to apply for initial ALA accreditation in July 1998. There are currently 108 students enrolled in classes in the program. The Library Research Service, under the direction of Keith Curry Lance, Ph.D., is a partnership between the Library and Information Services Program and the Colorado State Library. It is a new and evolving inter- disciplinary program that cross-lists courses with other University departments and has several University faculty joint appointments.
Review of applicants will begin December 1, 1996 and will continue until the position is filled. We are building a multicultural work force and strongly encourage women, ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities to apply. Special interest will be given to applicants who can serve well in an increasingly diverse university community.
Interviews will be conducted at the ALISE meeting in Washington, DC in February 1997. The appointment begins August 1997.
