Higher Education's Role in Realizing
Tomorrow's Information Services Environment

GENERAL SESSION III: Technology and the New Information Profession,
Friday, February 14, 1997, 10:00am - 10:45am

Higher education is one of the world's most information intensive enterprises. Our entire mission is focused around the use of information and its transformation into knowledge for transmission to the larger society. Further, large universities manage a diverse portfolio of supporting activities which cover almost the entire spectrum of management applications. As a consequence, information technology and services are strategic for institutions of higher education. We have also been a key source of innovation in technology and applications which support information services, and often the earliest large scale user of leading edge developments. This places universities in a position to have a major influence on not only our future but also on the broad information services environment for the society we serve. This presentation explores the implications of this role and how we might best realize the associated opportunities.
