This research is intended to investigate ways of providing intellectual access to images in electronic databases. The researchers intend to enhance the capabilities currently built into Internet tools such as Mosaic and Netscape by creating a classification and retrieval system that will facilitate the browsing of digitized images.
experimental system for classifying and retrieving images associated with the history of art has been designed, implemented, and is being evaluated. This database will be made available for use on a networked (World Wide Web) server at the School of Information and Library Studies (SILS). A full project summary is available.
The project team has used a "rapid prototype" method to develop the browser. The latest image browser prototype version is now available for browsing.
The U-M Fine Arts Library has a annotated list of Internet resources in the visual arts . This list was compiled by SILS Digital Library Associate Anne Noakes, who is serving as a research assistant for this project.
