Color the States

Have the students color in the free states and the slave states on the map below, perhaps doing the
free states in red and the slave states in blue.

Pick cities that would have been located in a slave state and figure out how manymiles it would
have been to get to a free state. How many miles to Canada?

How many miles of walking to freedom did some slaves have to do? Considering the slaves would travel
an average of 10 miles a day, how long would it take them?
