About this Project

Did people in the ancient world use animals in the same way we do? In some ways, yes (they rode horses, and so do we).

But ancient animals were also used in ways that might not occur to you. For example, bone was used for jewelry, cosmetic spoons, and pins for fancy hairdos, as well as for everyday things such as dice and needles. What materials are used to make these things today?

Animals were also depicted on personal possessions just as they decorate modern barrettes and other accessories.

Animals also provided materials for clothing. In the case are various tools that helped turn wool into cloth: shears, carding combs, spindle whirls, a loom weight. What can you see in the slide show above that explains how shepherds kept track of their sheep?
