About this Project

Just how many ways can animals be useful?

The pictures in this part of the exhibit were taken in Egypt by Kelsey photographers during the 1920s and 1930s.

  1. Then President of the University of Michigan, Alexander Ruthven, and his wife rode camels while sightseeing at the pyramids near Cairo.

  2. On another Egyptian sightseeing trip, the wife and son of Francis Kelsey, and the famous photographer G. R. Swain, rode mules.

  3. A local farmer plows his fields with oxen; camels lounge in the background.

  4. Oxen enjoying a swim during a break from work.

  5. A donkey resting, after helping to load hundreds of large storage jars onto this Nile River barge
