About this Project

What good is an animal on an archaeological project?

The photographs in this part of the exhibition, taken in the 1920s and 1930s, show animals involved in Kelsey Museum fieldwork.

Topsy the cat and Plupy the dog (shown twice) lived with and entertained the Kelsey team at the site of Karanis in Egypt; the donkey carried water for them.

The largest photograph shows Kelsey scholars enjoying a break from their labors at a restaurant near Mount Athos in Greece.

How many different animals are helping them eat their lunch?
