Wishbone,
Garfield, and Snoopy have left their paw prints on modern society—but
did Greeks and Romans have pets?
In ancient
times, the relationship between dogs and people was similar to today.
Dogs were companions and guardians. At all levels of ancient society,
dogs were an important part of family life. Even Alexander the Great had
a beloved dog, Peritas.
In Greek society, the lick of a dog was considered to be healing: hence
our expression “licking your wounds”! Dogs also warded off theft and evil.
