  1. Education was an important issue for African Americans in the early days of Harlem. The Henrietta Night School classes were for adults as well as young people. Have a classroom discussion on the importance of education in our community today. What programs are offered in the community for school dropouts? Or for people studying English as a second language?

  2. Have students do a survey in their communities and gather brochures that advertise educational programs. Set up a classroom display of these materials.

  3. Illiteracy is one of the major educational problems in this country. Have a classroom discussion on the importance of learning to read, to calculate and to think and write critically. Discuss with students what impact they think television has on the learning process. What are the negative effects? the positive?

  4. Have students write or discuss how they would plan an educational television show that addresses the problems of learning for young people Sesame Street and Electric Company can be used as examples. What other television show do they consider educational? Why?
