Regiment Military Band (the "Harlem Hellfighters") in Paris, 1917

II. How and when did the United States get involved? Discuss the status
of African Americans in the military in these wars.

in the military history of this country. Have them write a short essay
on a military hero of African descent (start with the Revolutionary
War).
- Have a series of classroom discussions on the similarities and differences
of the United States' policies in World War I, the Vietnam War and the
recent war in the Persian Gulf. Have students research newspaper articles
that support their arguments.
- Have students interview members of their families and people in their
communities who have gone to war. Have them write an essay based on
this oral history.
