Harlem Hospital

  1. Have students research hospitals run by African Americans in other cities. Have them make a list of these hospitals, when they were founded, by whom, and if they still exist.

  2. Have students interview a physician they know. Have them find out why the person decided to become a doctor, what they had to study, and what the hardest thing is about being a doctor.

  3. Take a classroom visit to Harlem Hospital. Find the WPA murals. Have students do a classroom mural based on the history of medicine and/or healing
