Lafayette Theatre
Opening night of Shakespeare's "Macbeth"

  1. Assign students to different parts of a play you have selected. Have them act the parts out in class in the language the play was written in originally. Then have students rewrite portions of the play in their own vernacular.

  2. Have a classroom discussion on the importance of language. Translate portions of Shakespeare's writing into modern English. Discuss the differences, the similarities. Why is it important?

  3. Have students write a rap play based on the works of a famous playwright; perform portions of it in class and write a critique on it.

  4. Have a classroom discussion on why it was significant that African-American audiences could sit in orchestra instead of balcony seats.
