Langston Hughes, 1902-1967, was known as the poet laureate of Harlem. He was a prolific writer and influenced an entire generation of poets. His poetry was bittersweet and based on the rhythms of jazz and blues. It was racially sensitive, earthy, and honest. "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" is one of his more famous poems.
