African Americans in Ann Arbor were very active in their churches. In fact, two churches in particular played a huge role in the lives of many African Americans: Bethel AME and Second Baptist. Although she was Catholic, Martha Washington Graham used to go to the churches listed above, where most of the African Americans attended because she wanted to be close to her friends and community.
