Time Markers



   Various "gongs" of different sizes and pitch mark off the rhythmic cycles of the music. In Indonesia, only the largest gong is called a "gong". They play least frequently and are the most important structurally.





Gong Ageng
This is the largest hanging gong at approximately one yard in diameter.




Kempul
This is a set of hanging gongs smaller than the siyem, each about 17 inches in diameter.




Kenong
This is a set of large pot gongs on a wooden frame. Each kenong  is about fifteen inches across and ten inches high.




Kethuk
This is a pair of small pot gongs on a wooden frame. Each gong is about nine inches in diameter.




Kempyang
This is a pair of small pot gongs set on a wooden frame. These are smaller and moe rounded than the kethuk.
