Public art is a significant part of our
cultureit's everywhere. Artists express many motivations for
creating art in public spaces, namely schools. This website explores
public reaction to public art at and around Los Angeles schools. In
this project, middle school students provided their reactions in the form
of essays inspired by the murals in the neighborhood of their school. |

Stylistic
Journey |
| |
Middle school students visited theUniversity of Michigan
Museum of Art several times to view three very different artworks:
an Asian ink scroll from 1621, a pointillist piece by Dubois-Pillet
and two 15th century Italian panel pieces. The director of the museum,
Bill Hennessey, led discussions and invited a guest speaker to demonstrate
Asian ink techniques. The students returned to their classrooms with
studio work in each medium and created their own art work inspired
by the styles they had studied. These creations are displayed in a
gallery on the web site. |

Folk
& Blues |
| |
Folk & Blues
in the Schools involves professional folk and blues musicians visiting
middle and high school classes and using live music to teach part
of the curriculum. Musicians perform songs relevant to the subjects
being studied and involve students in activities such as songwriting, singing,
playing music, and dancing. By using music as a teaching tool, students
become more engaged with the topics being taught. This site was developed
in cooperation with teachers and students in the Ann Arbor Public
Schools. |

Puerto Rico; others talk of its roots in African rhythms, Spanish
