WELCOME to SALSA STORIES!
|
The stories and histories of salsa music are still young and vibrant, unique
to every community in which it is performed. Because it brings together so
many different Latino musicians, ideas and musical styles, salsa has become
a way of communicating both within communities and across nations. Our tour
includes diverse cultural perspectives on salsa, interviews with musicians
and dancers, and specific musical descriptions.
It's been said that "salsa" is the music of Puerto Rico; others talk of its
roots in African rhythms, Spanish lyrics, Cuban street bands, Caribbean song
and dance styles and Latin American jazz. This tour introduces a "Nuyorican"
experience: stories about salsa from Puerto Rican and other Spanish Caribbean
communities in New York City. Much of our information comes from Wilson Valentin
and Frances Aparicio, salsa scholars from New York and Puerto Rico, respectively,
and conversations shared with us by salsa musicians and researchers.
