 We are the Real People
Yup'ik Mask Gallery Making our Ancestors' Ways Known

In collaboration with the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution, CHICO presents an online version of the Yup'ik Eskimo Mask Exhibit: Agayuliyararput (Our Way of Making Prayer). This exhibit brings together Yup'ik masks preserved in different museums from around the world, with the stories these masks tell, collected from Yup'ik elders.

The exhibition is curated by Ann Fienup-Riordan, with translations by Marie Meade. Photographs are by James Barker(JHB) and Barry McWayne(BM) and are published in the book Agayuliyararput: Our Way of Making Prayer: The Living Tradition of Yup'ik Masks by Ann Fienup-Riordan. University of Washington Press, 1996.
