The Yup'ik stories that you will read are told by Yupik elders. These people remember when Yup'ik masks were celebrated with dances, stories and songs. All of these stories were told in the Yup'ik language and translated word for word. The stories may seem different to you. A story that is told rather than written is organized differently and sometimes details are repeated.
The Yup'ik people believe that a storyteller should only tell something s/he has actually experienced. One storyteller explained, "Things were done differently in other places and they [storytellers] can tell only what they had observed or experienced."
We believe that you will come to respect and honor the Yup'ik people by reading and trying to understand their stories.
