W.P. Patrick/Dr. Mike Doss

Date received: 11/3/98

Donor: W.P. Patrick/M. Doss

Accession No. 1103931

Linear Ft.: 28

Plat books of land allotments from early 1900’s; books of maps of Crow Reservation; cash books 1877-92; early U.S. code books; 11 linear feet of papers on issues ranging from coal to construction of new hospital; items related to congressional testimony

From 1877-1987

In acid-free boxes

Initial ordering as sent to archives has been maintained

Needs metal removed

Some items are in very poor shape and need conservation work.

Plat books are currently on floor ; need to be stored in flat boxes off floor. Should consider deacidifying the plats as well. Parts of collection need vacuuming and/or paper repair.

This collection provides a unique window into allotment/settlement patterns, particularly for Sweetgrass County. Plat books on allotment and expenditure can be good corroborating evidence for genealogical research. Conservation of this collection will be time-consuming and very expensive.

BIA Collection

Date received: 10/20/96

Donor:

Accession No. 1020961

Linear Ft.: 181

Restrictions:

BIA administrative documents rescued from destruction by BIA. Includes records of correspondence, reports, payroll, per capita distributions, land leasing, land sales, natural resources, & other BIA functions.

From 1980-1993

In acid-free boxes. Overall good condition.

There is not a clear organizational structure to the documents. Minutes of meetings are mixed with vouchers/payment records to vendors.

The lack of a sensible retention schedule will make processing frustrating. As the collection is so large, processing should be at the box/folder level. Since there is no obvious record ordering, processor would be aided by a sense of BIA functions. Processing could take nearly a year of staff time; however, several boxes contain materials that can obviously be de-accessioned.

Crow Tribe Collection #2

Date received:

Donor: Crow Tribe

Accession No.

Linear Ft.: 51

Restrictions:

Tribal organizational records of various tribal programs. For example, court reports to the chairperson listing types of crimes committed and convicted, game warden reports, commodity distributions, and branding information.

From 1962 to 1990

In good condition.

There is not a clear organizational structure; this will make processing frustrating.

The accession of these records would have been greatly aided by a sensible retention schedule or records management structure. As they are, they lack a clear provenance. Due to the lack of order it is difficult to assess the complete breadth of the collection but it appears to give a significant slice of Crow Tribal Government of the time period covered.

Crow Tribal Collection #1

Date received:

Donor: Crow Tribe

Accession No.

Linear Ft.: 75

Restrictions: Must clarify legal restrictions on access. Until then, collection is closed.

Records from the offices of tribal attorneys that reflect the case law of the Crow Tribe. Documents reflect legal work of the tribe over an extended period. Of particular interest as an aid to a complete understanding of cases the tribe has taken up against the state and federal government.

From 1970’s to 1990’s

In good condition.

Needs metal and tape removed.

During processing, a case by case order may emerge. It may be helpful to look for this structure. Some of the files seem to indicate that that attorneys may have inherited old files from pervious tribal attorneys. This collection may be important for supporting precedence cases in the future.

-Box List

BIA Maps

Date received:

Donor: BIA, Crow Agency

Accession No.

Linear Ft.: 10

Includes 4094 aerial photo maps and negatives of the Crow Reservation.

From 1961 to 1974

Photos are in good condition.

There is no index to the maps.

Need to secure flat storage

An indexing system and/or reservation based mapping system should be created for archiving maps. May want to visit with map librarians at Bozeman or Missoula.

Little Big Horn College Collection

Date received: 1995

Donor: LBHC

Accession No.

Linear Ft.: 71

College records ranging from fiscal and student data to programs and fliers.

From 1980 to 1990

Sent to Archives in boxes.

No retention schedule exists for the College’s records and, as a result, the collections are not ordered.

What would be most helpful to this collection is the establishment of a records management system for the College that follows a records retention plan. As it is, box level description is probably acceptable for the current material.

Donald Parman

Date received: 9/13/90

Donor: Donald Parman

Accession No. 713901

Linear Ft.: 0.5

Photocopies and notes concerning the Crow Scandal and other events from 1905 to 1913. Also includes an essay on the Crow Scandal written in 1980.

In acid-free boxes.

Initial ordering as sent to archives maintained.

Needs metal removed.

A good annotation of the events surrounding the Scandal will help patrons access the information.

Pretty Eagle School

Date received: 6/1/93

Donor: St. Xavier Mission

Accession No. 610931

Linear Ft.: 2

Restrictions:

Collection of 65 reel to reel video tapes of elderly people taken in the early 1970’s by the school. Includes cultural stories as well as older songs and music.

In acid-free boxes.

Tapes are currently on varying length reel to reel tape. They should be transferred as soon as possible.

Again, immediate transferring of the collection from reel to reel is recommended. If possible, written transcriptions of the tapes should be done also. This would make a good base for a Crow cultural CD.

Smithsonian

Date received: 8/6/90

Donor: Smithsonian Institute

Accession No. 1107911

Linear Ft.: 0.5

Restrictions: Permission of the Smithsonian required to publish these materials

B/W photos (slides) of Crow delegations. Also excellent pictures of Medicine Crow and Plenty Coups. Print photos of Crow Fair and other older photos of tipis.

From 1900-1992

In acid-free boxes.

Slides are in metal boxes.

It may be well worthwhile to spend some time on identification of group shots. Also, research use of slides would benefit from an item by item description. Might also consider putting slides into mylar sleeves and into an album of some sort.

Ellis Prentice Cole

Date received: 7/4/91

Donor: Jane Cole Pine

Accession No. 704911

Linear Ft.: 1

Restrictions:

132 glass lantern slides. Range from photos taken at Crow Fair to "nature" scenes of buffalo.

From 1908-1952

132 of the slides are in a wooden box; the remainder are wrapped in tissue.

A very interesting collection . Images should be reproduced in a paper or slide format by a professional studio to aid in conservation of the original slides. Would make an excellent website project. Representations of beadwork may be of interest to Crow Studies students as well as other community members.

BIA Law and Order

Date received: 7/5/89

Donor: BIA Crow Agency

Accession No. 705891

Linear Ft.: 1

Restrictions:

BIA records of monthly vouchers, records of credit vouchers (welfare, Law and Order)

From 1957-1961

Files are in folders according to department and year.

Needs metal removed

Mostly business records of minimal archival value. Because records came in a logical order, there is already some intellectual control over the collection and should probably be a low priority for processing.

BIA Land Leases

Date received:

Donor:

Accession No.

Linear Ft.: 7

Restrictions: Tribal use only.

Government records of land leases for both non-Indian and Indian.

From 1994 to 1996

In original boxes. Should be transferred to acid-free boxes and folders.

As these are so current, one wonder if the records management at the local BIA is not somewhat suspect. It is an interesting collection—students can do comparative studies of current least practices with older lease practices identified in, for example, the Doss Collection. It has been suggested that the archives look into 638 contracting the records process at the agency. However, this would require a full-time records manager as well as significantly more storage space and other resources.

Rattle Snake Productions

Date received:

Donor: Connie Poten

Accession No.

Linear Ft.: 42

Subject matter varies but provides good description of Crow life and customs From 1983-84 (?)

Half of collection in acid-free boxes

Collection is in fairly bad shape. Some of collection has water damage and mold.

This is an extremely valuable collection of oral history. It needs to be cleaned and transferred to video as soon as possible. Transcriptions should be done for all remaining reels. This should be a high priority for processing and would benefit from item-level description.

Accession No. 110981

Liner Ft.: 4

Restrictions: For non-commercial, non-profit use only and only with the written consent of the donor

Also includes video tapes of Crow elders identifying photographs. Contains no original photos—these are held at the University of Wyoming and the National Archives.

In acid-free boxes.

Metals have been removed.

Processing has been started. Materials have been refoldered and a folder level inventory has been produced.

Location of videotapes is unclear.

The folder level inventory provides access to all the materials in the collection, excepting the video tapes. However, a series level organizational structure under which the folders can be arranged will give a more logical and efficient order.

Preliminary finding aid has been started. Scope & Content notes have been written. It may be most efficient to ask Albright to write her own provenance statement.

The videotapes should be found and processed with the rest of the collection.
