SI 505 Design and management of information systems and services
Final presentation guidelines and schedule
March 17, 1999

Goal:

To prepare a formal presentation of findings and recommendations like that given by a team of consultants in the business world, in the format of a Management Briefing (see Content below). This doesn't mean "formal" in style necessarily (i.e., it doesn't have to be a "lecture," shouldn't be read from a script, and may include conversations, Q&A and so on), but should be "formal" in the sense of being businesslike, well-prepared, and well-rehearsed, with clear and persuasive content.

The instructors expect a high level of performance in this assignment; more details on Management Briefings and Presentations will be posted on the web site after spring break.

Audience:

The presentation should be addressed to your client and the instructors. The audience will include your client(s), the course instructors, and possibly some invited guests (4-8 people in total).

Method of delivery and timing:

Provide a 45 minute PowerPoint (for PC or Mac) presentation with slide handout and other material as appropriate, inclusive of 10 minutes of discussion at the end. Attention to appropriate background, font (not less than 24 point) and use of language is assumed. Typically each team member will speak to 4 or 5 slides (5-7 minutes).

Location and equipment:

All presentations will take place in the Collaboration Technology Suite at CREW (2nd floor Business School, first door to the east from the entrance to Kresge library). Each team will sign up for a rehearsal in this room. You will have network access via Mac or PC to a large wall-display. Other equipment such as an overhead projector and videotape deck can be made available.

Content of the presentation:

Your presentation should be a Management Briefing, addressing what the client wants to know! Each team member should be prepared to present a section or portion of the briefing (important - see Evaluation by faculty below). Briefing sections will include the following, modified to fit the project:

Introduction
Of team
Of briefing content
Of major points
Problem statement (what your project was supposed to do, what problem it tried to solve)
Methodology/milestones
Recommendations
Threats and aids to the recommendations' success
Conclusion
Questions (allow 10 minutes for discussion)
Evaluation by faculty (20% of grade - 100 points):

Each person will receive an individual grade, which will reflect a combination of  the group's performance on the criteria listed below and that individual's personal performance in his or her portion of the presentation.

Quality of group delivery (20 pts) + Quality of individual delivery (20 pts): Clear, free of distractions, concise, convincing, smooth transitions between parts and between presenters, consistent in tone and style, addresses audience through visual contact.
Quality of content (30 pts): Logically organized, addresses what the client wants to hear, shows evidence of team collaboration.
Use of visual media (30 pts): Consistent, effortless, follows established guidelines for quality, readability, and effectiveness. Any optional handouts are clear, well-written and reinforce the main points of the presentation.

Evaluation by client

Did this presentation address your problem?
In what way were your expectations not met?
Would you participate with an SI student team at some future time?
