1062. State of Michigan, Department of Public Health, Division of
Epidemiology
Swine Flu Subject Files, [85-44] 1975-1979.
3.5 cubic feet.
Summary: Detail the efforts of state government to
combat the predicted swine
flu epidemic. Swine flu was a virus discovered in pigs that was
transmitted
to humans with deadly results. The federal government orchestrated various
programs that worked in conjunction with the state to immunize the public
against the virus before it spread throughout the population.
Unfortunately
the vaccine proved more controversial than the alleged viral epidemic.
Many who received the vaccination suffered paralysis as a result. Include
the
Guillian-Barre Syndrome cases; news articles and clippings; vaccination
summaries; statistical data on the outbreak within the Native American
population; and information on lawsuits filed by individuals or their
families as a result of the government-sponsored swine flu program.
