Background: Founded by the rector of St. Marks Episcopal Church, 1872, as a home for needy persons; officially incorporated as St. MarkÕs Home and Hospital, 1876; renamed Butterworth Hospital, 1894 in honor of benefactor Richard E. Butterworth; became an independent corporation, 1902, and largest hospital in Grand Rapids.
