Jackson (d. 1870) and Elizabeth
Caroline Wilcox were married on September 5, 1844. They had a
daughter,
Elizabeth Prudence Jackson, and a son, Charles Jackson (d. 1864).
Charles
Jacckson served in the Second Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Company G,
during
the Civil War; he was wounded in the leg, had his leg amputated, and
died of
the wound. A close friend of the family was Sergeant Sanford Douglas
Payne (d.
1913) of Company H, Eighth Michigan Calvary, who served in Kentucky
and
Tennessee; Payne later was a school teacher.
Summary: Consists of letters written to the Jackson
family during the Civil War Period.
Most were written by Sanford Douglas Payne. The letters
describe Payne's life
as a soldier serving in Kentucky and Tennessee and often refer
to Charles
Jackson, includine descriptions of Jackson's leg injury and
amputation. The
collection also includes a verse that was presented at the
laying of the
cornerston of the Soldiers and Sailors monument in Detroit
(1867).
