The images in this collection provide a sample of some of the many murals that
fill the streets and buildings of Los Angeles. Mostly photographed in
East Los Angeles, this group of murals focuses on Chicano themes, symbols
and issues. In most cases the Chicano murals in the city have been
created by local artists and their helpers in the community. Many murals
incorporate the participation of local youth and are funded by community
businesses and organizations. The earliest mural that you will see in
this collection dates back to 1970 and the latest image is from 1994. The
number of murals in the city is growing every year. Because of the nature
of these street murals, it is difficult to collect a complete set of
information for every mural. All of the photographs in this collection
were taken by Susan Atkins.

Las imágenes en esta colección proveen unos ejemplares de los
numerosos murales que llenan las calles y los edificios de Los Angeles.
La mayoría de los murales fueron retratados en el barrio del Este de
Los Angeles y enfocan en los temas, los símbolos y asuntos chicanos.
En muchos casos los murales chicanos de la ciudad han sido creados con la
ayuda de la comunidad. Muchos murales incorporan la participación
de jóvenes locales y fueron patrocinados por empresas y
organizaciones en la comunidad. El mural más viejo que se puede ver
