Changing your Novell Passwords

It is important to remember you have *two* Novell passwords: One is used to login to SI Windows PC's and ftp in (this is your NDS password) and the other password is used to connect to the Netware servers from the Macintosh as outline at http://www.si.umich.edu/sic/MacOSX/netware.php (this password is known as the Simple Password).
If you change your Novell password on a SI Windows PC only the password used to login to the PC's is changed (the NDS password). The Simple Password used to connect to the Novell Netware servers from the Mac's remains unchanged.

If you change your Novell password on a Mac both passwords will be changed (both the Simple Password and the NDS password). If you want your passwords to be synchronized, you should change your passwords from the Macintosh. Note: your Novell passwords must currently be synchronized to be able to change your passwords on the Mac. If the passwords are not currently the same the password change attempt on the Mac will fail. If you passwords are currently not synchronized, and you would like them to be or you would like to change your Simple Password, you will need to stop by the SI Computing office for assistance.
Instructions on how to change your Novell Passwords on the Mac.

To change your Novell Passwords on the Mac follow the instructions below:
1) Disconnect any Novell Netware volumes you currently have mounted. To disconnect these volumes drag them to the trash.

2) Hold down the "apple" key and press the letter "k". This will bring up a network connection dialog window. Or go to the "Go"menu and choose "Connect to Server".

3) In the address field type either skinner.si.umich.edu or selma.si.umich.edu. For example, if you are a Student type the address "skinner.si.umich.edu" (without the quotes) and hit return.

4) A new window will appear asking for your user name and password. Make sure that you use your unique name for the user name, leave the password field empty.

5) Click the 'Options' button. This will bring up a dialog window.

6) Click the 'Change Password' button. This will bring up a Change Password dialog window.

7) Type in your old (current) Password, use the mouse to navigate to the next field. We have found that occasionally if 'tab' is used to navigate between the fields, the 'tab' will be passed as a character making the password change fail.

8) Type in what you want your new Novell passwords to be. Note the Password must be between 6 and 8 characters long, should include both numbers and letters, and should not be a word in any language. Again, use the mouse to navigate to the next field.

9) Again, type in what you want your new Novell passwords to be (the same as what you typed in step 8). Use the mouse to click on the OK button.

Instructions on how to change your Novell Passwords on an SI Windows PC:
*Note* using this method will result in your two Novell passwords not being the same. This will result in your NDS Password (the one used to login to SI Windows PC's and ftp) being the 'new' password and the Simple Password (the one used to connect to the Netware servers from the Macintosh) being the 'old' password. This will also result in you being unable to change your passwords (either) on the Mac.
1) Read the Note above again to be sure you understand that this will result in your passwords not being synchronized

2) Login to an SI Windows PC.

3) Press Control+Alt+Delete. This will bring up a 'Netware Security' window.

4) Click on the "Change Password" button. This will bring up a "Change Password" window.

5) Type in your old password, hit 'tab', type in what you want your NDS password to be, hit 'tab' and again type in what you want your NDS password to be.
