Printing from a Windows PC requires installation of the Novell iPrint client.
iPrint client installation
The iPrint client is available for download from http://iprint.si.umich.edu. You must be logged into the Windows PC as an administrator to install the iPrint client. When prompted, save the file to a location on your hard drive. After the download is complete begin the installation by double clicking the file you downloaded. During the installation, leave all the default selections. A reboot and login is required to complete the iPrint client installation.
iPrint Authentication (Login)
You will be prompted to authenticate to iPrint.
All SI users should input the following:
Username: uniqname
Password: your Novell password
(the same password you use to login to SI Computing
managed PC's or to FTP to SI's Novell servers)
iPrint printer installation
Once the iPrint client is installed, printers can be installed by going back to http://iprint.si.umich.edu. With the iPrint client installed, you will see a list of SI printers. To install a printer on the computer click on the "Install" link to the right of the printer name you wish to install. Please take note of the printer naming convention:
si-(building)-(room#)-(printer/make/model)(bw-or-c)
Building: The building where the printer is located. examples: westhall, north, shapiro, diad, ipl.
Room: The room number where the printer is located.
Printer/make/model: The short name of the printer make and model, e.g. hp5simx, or hp8000dn.
bw-or-c: black and white (bw) printer or color (c) printer.
Important Note: While you can download and install the client with Netscape, Internet Explorer is required to do the actual printer install.
The printer installation may not properly detect if the printer has a duplexer. You may need to manually add the duplexer setting to the printer after you install it on your computer. To add the duplexer setting to an installed printer, open up the "Printer" window (Start > Settings > Printers). Right-click on the printer, choose properties. This will bring up the properties page of the select printer. Click on the "Configure" or the "Device Settings" tab (one or the other will be available depending on the printer model).
If you clicked the "Configure" tab you should see a check box for "Duplexing Unit". Check this box if you are certain the printer does indeed have a duplexer.
If you clicked the "Device Settings" tab you will likely need to scroll down to the "Installable Options". There should be a "Duplex Unit" selection that you can change by clicking on it. There should be a pull down list available for "Installed" or "Not Installed".
The printer installation will take approximately 3-10 minutes depending on your connection speed. During the installation drivers are downloaded to your computer and the printer is created on your computer.
