Monitor Instructions for Logging Users Into DIALOG and Lexis-Nexis

  • Preparation for the SI 665 labs (this should be done before the start time for the labs):
    1. Set up the wall 15 minutes before the beginning of the first lab time
    2. Tell anybody not doing the lab in the back 2 rows to move up to the front 3 rows if they are available; they can use the multimedia Macs in the back if they can be quiet
    3. Make sure all of the Macs in the back two rows are up and running
    4. Have the students taking the lab log into the Mac when they arrive

  • Logging the user into DIALOG or Lexis-Nexis:
    1. Quit out of the Terminal application if it's already running

    2. Right click on the Applications alias in the Dock at the bottom of the desktop. It's near the Trash icon and has the following icon:

    3. Scroll down through the applications until you get to Utilities and wait until your mouse-over shows you what's in that folder

    4. In the Utilities folder, find and left click on SI-665-Launcher

    5. Click on the Dialog or Lexis-Nexis button in the resulting window
    6. For Lexis-Nexis, log in with one of the 5 personal identification numbers (only 5 people can log in at a time with Lexis-Nexis)
    7. For DIALOG, log in with the USER ID and PASSWORD from the sheet in the clipboard in the back room of the DIAD.
Note: Don't use the same USER ID and PASSWORD for back to back lab sessions: For the first 1/2 hour, start with the first one and go down the list. For the next consecutive 1/2 hour, don't go back to the first one and use it again, keep going down the list. Then for the next 1/2 hour, you can go back to the top again.
    8. After you successfully log in and you see the "?" prompt, let the user do their search.
    9. If a student's session unexpectedly dies on them, you can log them back in and let them start over. If they don't have time to start over, they will have to ask their instructor for a later make-up time to re-do their lab.

  • After the user is done searching and has logged out of DIALOG or Lexis-Nexis, you may need to help them do the following:
    1. Save their search results to a Microsoft Word document on the desktop
    2. Print this document (try to have them print it duplex to save paper)
    3. Save the document to their SI NetWare student home directory

Issues and Policies:

  • Basic Lab Policies:
    1. Labs start on the 1/2 hour.
    2. If a student is late for a lab, he/she can do their search if they think they can complete it in the remaining time left. Otherwise, they'll have to reschedule it with their instructor.
    3. Please try to keep it quiet in and around the back two rows while DIALOG labs are happening. Please keep people who are not taking the labs, or getting ready to take them, away from the back two rows.

  • All SI students are allowed a total of 1/2 hour of extra online searching per week. This includes DIALOG and Lexis-Nexis. Search times are cumulative for all three, so you do not get 1/2 hour for each per week.

  • Students taking SI 665 may not use the extra 1/2 hour to practice the search they'll be doing for their lab. Also, this search time cannot be used to do searches for which money is collected from some third party, or for searches that support students' own businesses, work assignments, or consulting.

  • Web version of the DIALOG Bluesheets

  • The various Thesauri that we have for the databases are available for checkout in exchange for your Student ID when a lab monitor is present. If the monitor must leave with no replacement, you must turn the material back in.

  • How to delete saved searches in DIALOG:
    1. Log into dialog as user id with the saved search(es)
    2. At the prompt, type recall save
    3. At the prompt, type release DD001
    4. Log off
