Netscape Mail Using Netscape 7.1 to transfer mail from SI's email server to local folders accessible by Netscape 7.1 Mail.

NOTE: DO NOT use this method on a general use computer at SI, such as the DIAD computers. It will store your e-mail on a computer where many people login. Also, these computers could be completely wiped and reloaded at any time, causing you to lose all of this e-mail.

Directions:

1) Install Netscape 7.1. We suggest you select a Custom install and choose only those components you want. For the purpose of the Mail transfer and to have the ability to read Mail with Netscape, only 'Mail & Instant Messaging" and "Spellcheck" needs to be installed, none of the 'Additional Components' are required.

2) Configure Netscape Mail. IMPORTANT NOTE: By default Netscape Mail sends your password clear text. Before setting up and using Netscape Mail be certain you are aware of the concerns of sending your password clear text. To avoid sending your password clear text Netscape needs to be configured to "Use secure connection (SSL)". To set Netscape to use SSL, go to Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings. Choose "Server Settings", check the box for "Use secure connection (SSL)", the "Port:" should change to 993.

The settings you need to provide Netscape mail to connect to SI's email server include:

  • select use IMAP
  • IMAP server: imap.si.umich.edu
  • SMTP server: smtp.itd.umich.edu

3) Login to SI's email server

4) Create a new folder under 'Local Folders' to hold messages copied over from the SI email server. To create a new local folder, right click 'Local Folders', select 'New Folder...', provide a name for this new folder.

5) Click on a folder within your SI email InBox that contains messages you wish to copy locally. This will display the messages in folder in the Messages pane. (Note, each folder within your SI email Inbox will need to be copied individually).

6) Highlight all the messages within the Message pane that you wish to copy to the Local Folders.

7) Right click the highlighted messages. Select 'Copy to". Select 'Local Folders'. Select the Local Folder you created in step 4.

8) Verify the number of messages you copied is the same number you selected to copy over.

Tip: To have Netscape show the number of messages in each folder, click on the icon in the upper right corner of the folder list window. Select 'Total' (and 'Unread' if you desire).

10) Once you are satisfied the messages have been copied local, delete the messages from the SI email server. To do this you can either delete a whole folder containing messages by right clicking the desired folder within your Inbox and choosing 'Delete Folder'. Note: This will not actually delete the messages it will just move the messages (or folder containing messages) to the Trash folder. You must empty the Trash folder (right click it and choose 'Empty Trash') to actually delete the messages and reduce the amount of disk space you are using on the SI email server.

Repeat steps 4 through 10 for all folders and/or messages as needed.
