What is Pine? - Pine is a public domain IMAP (Interactive Mail Access Program) client which gives you access to your e-mail from a Unix login server terminal prompt.

Where can Pine be run from? - Pine can be used on the ITCS Unix login server: login.itd.umich.edu. You'll need an SSH client to connect to login.itd.umich.edu.

Running Pine
After you have successfully logged into login.itd.umich.edu, just type "pine" at the prompt and hit return, and Pine should start up and give you a window like the following:

Above is Pine's Main Menu, the first screen you'll see every time you run Pine. The very top line displays the name of the current screen and the folder* you are working in.
*Pine organizes files, such as "sent-mail" and your mail "Inbox," in folders, which can be viewed by selecting "FOLDER LIST" from the main menu, or by typing the letter "L".

Pine Commands:
The bottom two rows of every Pine screen display the available commands. Each command is activated by typing the indicated letter. Sometimes, you will have additional choices, which you can view by typing the letter "O" for "other commands." If a command letter is preceded by a caret (^) symbol, you must hold down the Control Key while typing the designated letter.

Help

Online assistance for Pine is always available, with the stroke of a key! What Pine function you are in will determine both how you get help and what kind of help you will receive.

  • Help while in the Main Menu is available by typing in a "?" or selecting the "HELP" line and hitting the "return" key. This takes you to a menu of items for general information and assistance with Pine.

  • When reading a message, type a "?" to receive a detailed explanation of the "Message Text Commands."

  • When composing or replying to a message, one must hold down the "control" key and type the letter "G" to get help. The help that is displayed refers to the particular field of the "compose message screen" you are in. For example, if you are typing in the "Cc" (or "carbon copy") field and request help, the screen you will see is the "Help for Composer Cc Field."
How do I get out of this?

To quit out of Pine and return to the prompt just type "Q" and respond to the questions it will ask you.
