Deleting attachments in Pine at SI
Message attachments can be deleted without removing the entire message by using Pine. By marking the undesired attachment for deletion and saving the message to a folder, the message and message header information are preserved, but the attachment is removed from the message.
Note: This is a very easy way to reduce the amount of disk usage on the email server.
- Navigate to message with attachment(s):
After you've logged into login.si.umich.edu via SSH
and started pine, the first thing you have to do is navigate to the message which has the attachment you wish to delete.
- Open the Message:
Open the message by pressing ">" or "V". You should now see the message header (the "Date:", "From:" and "To:" information), the attachment list, and the message text.
- View Attachment(s):
To view the attachments in the message you need to go to the "Attachment Index". Go to the "Attachment Index" by pressing ">" or "V".
- Mark Attachments for Deletion:
The attachment(s) you want to delete can be marked for deletion by pressing "D". After you have marked the attachment(s) you wish to delete, the marked attachments should have a "D" in the left most column.
- Exit Attachment Index:
Press "<" to exit out of the "Attachment Index". You should now be viewing the message header, attachment list (with the targeted attachments marked with a "D"), and the message text.
- Save Message Without the Attachment(s):
Press "S" to save the message. You will be prompted with the following message:
Saved copy will NOT include entire message! Continue?
Y [Yes]
N No
If you are sure you want to save the message and exclude the marked attachments, press "Y" for yes.
- Select Where to Save Message:
After you click "Y" to save the message without the attachments, you need to select where to save the message. The default selection is "saved-messages". If you would select a different folder, press Control Key + "T", to bring up a list of your folders. Navigate to the folder where you would like to save the message and press "S" or Return.
- Save Message:
You should now see a prompt similar to:
SAVE Msg #1 to folder [saved-messages] : Test Save Message Folder
G Help T To Fldrs
C Cancel Ret Accept
Press Return to save the message in the folder listed (in the example about this would be "Test Save Message Folder".
