SmartFTP on Windows How-To

Table of Contents SmartFTP Introduction
Downloading and installing the SmartFTP client on a Windows PC will enable a SSL-FTP connection to SI Novell Netware servers (e.g. Groups, Users, Students, etc).

Download and Install the SmartFTP client
  • Download the client from http://www.smartftp.com/ and install.
  • Click on the "Download" link.
Note: You can either select to download an online installer, or you can download the offline installer. Either download has worked in our testing.
  • After you have downloaded the file, double click the file (either SFTPSetup.exe for online installer or SFTPNSI.exe for offline installer) to begin the install.
  • The default selections can be left during the install.
Configure SmartFTP
To connect to SI's Novell servers securely you need to configure the client to connect using SSL.
  • To configure the program to use SSL, startup SmartFTP.
  • Go to Tools Menu, choose Settings.
  • In the Settings window in the list on the left side of the window expand "Connection" and select SSL.
  • In the "AUTH Mode" field select "SSL".
  • In the "Data Connection Mode" you need to select either "Clear Data Connection" or "Private Data Connection".
    • Clear Data Connection will encrypt the authentication to the FTP server, but will not encrypt the file transfer.
    • Private Data Connection will encrypt the entire session both authentication and data transfer. Note: Selecting Private Data Connection will significantly slow down all file transfers.
  • Back in the list on the left hand side of the window select History.
We strongly recommend that you uncheck the "Save Passwords" box.
  • Click OK to close the Settings window.
  • On the Address Toolbar, drop down the "Address" item (not the address itself, but the page icon to right of the word "Address").
  • Select FTP Over SSL (Explicit).
  • Then enter ftp-novell.si.umich.edu in the field where it says "yourserver.com"
  • Enter your uniqname in the "Login" field.
Using SmartFTP
With SmartFTP open and configured as described above (Configure SmartFTP):
  • To initiate a connection to SI's Novell FTP server click on the 'Connect' icon. The Connect icon looks like a computer with a globe behind it.
  • You will be prompted for your Novell password to authenticate.
  • After you successfully login look at the log of the session (in the window beneath the file listing). You should see entries such as:
220 Service Ready for new User
    	AUTH SSL
    	234 Enabling SSL
    	Connected. Exchanging encryption keys...
    	Session Cipher: 128 bit RC4
    	SSL encrypted session established.
    	PBSZ 0

  • These show that your login was encrypted with 128 bit RC4 SSL.
  • You will be placed in your Novell home directory.
Additional SSL-FTP notes
This is one example of a SSL-FTP client that works against the Novell servers. Additional SSL-FTP clients may work as well.
See http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10085857.htm for more information from Novell on SSL-FTP clients.
