What is telnet, exactly?

NCSA Telnet is TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Prorocol) client software which optionally supports encrypted and authenticated sessions. You can open multiple sessions at the same time. What is does is allow you to communicate with a remote computer.

Connecting to Telnet means that you are communicating with the SILS Unix Server, which is located at the school itself. You are also being connected to your IFS space, which is located on the IFS Server, which is on North campus someplace. If there is a problem with either the SILS machine or the IFS machine, you will not be able to log on.

Why does Telnet sometimes disconnect?

If there is a problem with the SILS server or the IFS Server, you may be booted off.

Why won't Control-C work?

Under the Session menu, select setup keys and delete the Control-C from the interrupt process field.

How can I change the number of lines in my text window?

Under the Session menu, select set screen size and do so.

How can I print a session?

You will want to use that darn Session menu again--select capture session to file. You will get a menu which allows you to name the file and save it to desktop, disc, or whatever.

How do I set up a Special Session?

First off, if you do this on any DIAD lab computer other than the staff terminal, your special session will get overwritten when the computer is reloaded. However, this information may come in handy anyhow if you are having trouble with a special session, such as the local echo or control-c not working.

What you will want to do is select preferences-sessions from the edit menu. From there, click on the session that you wish to work on (i.e. Dialog, nexus, etc.) and then click on the change button. You will then get a menu of preferences which you can set. To set up a new special session, do the same thing, except instead of choosing an existing session and selecting change, you will want to click on the new button. You will get a menu which lets you type in the host name and choose your preferences.

How do I make a signature file?

While at the si% prompt, type pico (or your favorite editor) .signature and type whatever you want to. When you are done, type control-c. You can make a plan file or a project file the same way, just type pico .plan or pico .project.
