SI 665 Lab User Instructions

  • Please be in the DIAD at least 5 minutes before your SI 665 lab begins, and let the lab monitor know you are there to do your lab. The monitor will direct you to sit in a row based on your lab time.

  • Once you have been seated, log into the Mac with your uniqname and UMich Kerberos password and wait for the lab monitor to log you into DIALOG or Lexis-Nexis.

  • After you are logged in, do your lab.

  • After you you are finished and log off, DO NOT close the terminal window if you want to save your results

  • Save your results to a Microsoft Word document on the desktop:
    1. Go to the "File" menu and choose "Save Text As"
    2. Type a name in the "Save as:" box; you can call it anything you like as long as it has the .doc suffix
    3. Choose "Desktop" from the "Where:" pull-down menu
    4. Click on the "Save" button
    5. Look for the document you just saved on the desktop and double click on it to open it in Microsoft Word and make sure your search results are all there
    6. Now you can quit out of the Terminal application

  • Fix the margins of the resulting document:
    1. After opening the Word document that has your lab results, you'll need to fix the margins to make the document printable
    2. Go to the "Format" menu and choose "Document..."
    3. Change the left and right margins from .25" to .5"
    4. click on the "OK" button

  • Print the Microsoft Word results file (double-sided to save paper):
    1. Under the "File" menu in Word, choose "Print..."
    2. In the resulting dialog box, choose the printer you want to use (usually one of the 3 DIAD printers) from the "Printer:" pull down menu near the top.
    3. Click on the pull-down menu with "Copies & Pages" and change it to "Layout"
    4. Click on the "Long-Edge Binding" radio button next to "Two Sided Printing"
    5. Click on the "Print" button
    6. Collect the papery reward from your printer of choice!

  • Save the Word results file in your home directory:
    1. If you don't have it there already, you need to mount the SKINNER.STUDENTS volume by clicking once on the icon in the Dock that looks like a hard drive and is labeled "Server Aliases" when you move the mouse over it
    2. From the resulting sub-level, choose "Students"
    3. Log in with your uniqname and SI Novell password.
    4. In the resulting window on your desktop, find your home directory and double-click on it.
    5. Double-click on the "Private" folder in your home directory and drag and drop the Word results file from the desktop to somewhere in that Private folder.

  • After you have completed all of the above, please do the following before you leave:
    1. Quit out of any running applications
    2. Click once on the Word results file with the right mouse button and choose "Move to Trash"
    3. Click once on the Trash icon in the Dock with the right mouse button and choose "Empty Trash"
    4. Double click with the left mouse button on the "Log Me Out" icon on the desktop

Issues and Policies:

  • Please be courteous to other students doing their labs by keeping noise to a minimum.

  • All SI students are allowed a total of 1/2 hour of free extra online searching per week. This includes DIALOG and Lexis/Nexis. Search times are cumulative for both, so you do not get 1/2 hour for each per week.

  • If there is not a lab monitor in the DIAD, you must call or send an e-mail to schedule a time when they can be there.

  • This free searching time is not available when the SI 665 labs are scheduled

  • Students taking SI 665 may not use the extra 1/2 hour to practice the search they'll be doing for their lab. Also, this search time cannot be used to do searches for which money is collected from some third party, or for searches that support students' own businesses, work assignments, or consulting.

  • Web version of the DIALOG Bluesheets

  • The various Thesauri that we have for the databases are available for checkout in exchange for your Student ID when a lab monitor is present. If the monitor must leave with no replacement, you must turn the material back in.

  • How to delete saved searches in DIALOG:
    1. Log into dialog as user id with the saved search(es)
    2. At the prompt, type "recall save"
    3. At the prompt, type "release DD001"
    4. Log off

  • Keyboard tips: Sometimes, if you need to interrupt a process you've started
(entering a TYPE command for a number of items from the wrong set, for example), you can hit Control-C to interrupt the process.

  • If you miss your lab time, please request another time from your professor.

  • Please do not ask the DIAD monitors for help on how to search. They are not supposed to do this, and chances are they do not know how anyway.
