This guide contains a variety of
resources offered by the School of Information (SI) and the larger
University of Michigan computing community to support you in your
technological endeavors at SI.
SI Computing vs. ITCS
The School of Information (SI) has a support staff of 5
full-time staff people who provide computing, audio-visual,
and teleconferencing technical support for faculty, staff
and students of the School. The University of Michigan also
has a group (the Information Technology Division or ITCS) that
includes in excess of 600 people who provide these services
and more; telecommunications, systems research, and strategic
network planning. The implications of this setup for SI affiliates
are that services are provided by both entities; SI takes
care of faculty and staff home directories, while ITCS is responsible
for student home directories. Hardware and software are purchased
and maintained by SI Computing staff, at times with the support
of ITCS. ITCS maintains the dial-in pool for the University
as well as a common pool of site-licensed software available
for departmental use. SI purchases and supports additional
software on an as-needed basis.
