SI Computing offers an array of support services. In addition to
installing and maintaining office machines for faculty and staff
members, SI Computing staff will install laptops, home machines, and
configure special equipment such as Cable modem or xDSL configuration,
wireless adaptors, ISDN lines and teleconferencing hardware. Any
machines that are to be sent home with faculty and staff are required
to be set up in room 400, West Hall; if problems occur after the machine
has been configured, the machine must be brought back to the office
for repair. Telephone support is available during normal business hours.
Limited on site help is only available with the approval of the
manager when the workload makes such time possible.
Servers
SI maintains a variety of servers in order to support the wide-ranging
and variable set of applications, clients and servers needed by School
affiliates. The SI Computing staff provide these services at the
request of the faculty and staff and will make efforts to meet all requests or offer similar services. Members of the School community are
encouraged
to seek out the advice and aid of the staff of SI Computing early in
the
process of selecting software and hardware configurations that are
compatible with the current and projected computing environment. More
information on the status and configuration of those machines can be
found on the Servers at SI page.
Databases
SI Computing supports database environments on the Mac, Windows, Linux
and Unix platforms. Currently SI Computing supports PHP/MySQL on Linux
and ColdFusion/Access on Windows. Additional options may be
available.
Contact si.computing@umich.edu in order to get additional information
on
SI database servers or the ITCS Oracle database alternatives.
Equipment Checkout
SI has a collection of digital and analog equipment available for
short
term checkout. At the managers discretion some of these items are
made
available for longer term checkouts. Reservations should be made at
least 2 business days in advance by emailing si.computing@umich.edu,
calling 936-7255, or by stopping by the office. Students and
affiliates
must have the permission of an instructor or senior staff member.
Certain equipment types have many reservations and SI Computing will
try
to honor all requests. Please be sure to return equipment on time.
Classroom support
There are 3 main classrooms located in the West Hall suite of the
School of Information, rooms 311, 409, and 431. Facilities
descriptions
may be found at Classrooms at SI. The SI Computing group provides
support for the technology needs of the equipment in the rooms. The
SI
Facilities manager handles non-technology issues.
