About the Images:
The Earth and Space Science Brower (ESSB) is a web-accessible database system that allows users to use different search tools to access images. Using this system, users have the option to locate images with traditional textual search methods, like keyword search and subject browsing. The system also provides visual search tools that users can use to find images according colors, textures, shapes.
The database contains approximately 1400 Earth and Space Science images, and annotations that provide background information, such as, title, mission, source, date for each of the images.
The text descriptions were compiled by the University of Michigan, School of Information students. We also implemented several computer vision algorithms to compute the visual information of the images. These algorithms use raw image data to determine the visual characteristics of the images. Thus, the database contains image visual information that describes the color, shape, and texture characteristics of each image.
