Meeting Agenda

August 27-29, 1997

Pisa, Italy

Although the agenda is still flexible, the basic scheme we have in mind is as follows:

Day 1: Build up a shared background. Short presentations from each participant about his/her DL-related research and policy activities. Discussions of other background experience relevant to our mission.

Day 2: Research and policy questions. Short presentations from each participant on open questions, priorities, and the potential role of academia, government (including public research funding), and opportunities for international collaboration.

Day 3: Drafting initial framework for "progress" in DL/IPE. Decompose into topic areas, work on strawman recommendations in subgroups. Compare notes, and prepare for the second (final) meeting (probably Spring in Ann Arbor).

The key preparation item is for Day 2. We presume that most of you can introduce yourself and your recent work (Day 1) without preparing anything special for this mtg. For the Day 2 brief, we would like each of you to prepare some thoughts on what are the pressing issues in DL/IPE from your perspective. Since you were chosen for diversity of disciplines and sectors represented, we expect that you will all focus on different facets, and even when our foci are coincident, our positions may not be.

To facilitate the discussion, we further ask each of you to submit an informal 1-3 page "position statement" outlining some of the points you intend to bring up on the Day 2 discussions. Feel free to use whatever style you like to convey your positions. We will circulate these by e-mail and over the web before the meeting. We ask that you submit these statements by 18 July.

Finally, we welcome your feedback on the meeting plans, and any suggestions you have to make this a most productive and enjoyable gathering.
