7.0 Cost Sharing
The University of Michigan has made a substantial cost sharing commitment of $3.47 million over four years from its internal resources reflecting its determination that the NSF, ARPA and NASA digital library initiative presents a significant opportunity to influence libraries for the future. It has also attracted a broad base of corporate partners.
Summary of University Contribution
The University's contribution includes:
- $1,006,480 student tuition revenue. Since Michigan law prohibits waving of tuition, the University will apply general fund dollars to the project.
- $979,735 faculty salaries. Faculty will be supported by these funds for research during the summer.
- $800,000 equipment. A description of the equipment allocation is provided in the budget summary.
- $85,000 travel and supplies
- $593,629 foregone indirect cost
Summary of Corporate Contribution
Both Information resource and technology providers have committed significant gifts-in-kind as well as senior professional personnel to the University of Michigan' s proposed UMDL project. The total of this contribution to date is $1,385,690; Detail is provided in the table below. In all cases, these corporate partners have indicated their intention to supplement their initial contribution with new resources (content and technology) to ensure that the UMDL has access to products that are developed during the period of the project. In addition, the Information Resource Providers (Elsevier, McGraw-Hill and UMI) have waived royalty payments for users of the UMDL during the project.
The extent of the contribution reflects the confidence of the information resource and technology providers in the University of Michigan research team.
