1. Introduction

The purpose of this document is to define a particular conspectus to be used by the University of Michigan Digital Library(UMDL) team for the University of Michigan Digital Library project. The conspectus is constructed with the purpose of refining the number of collections available through the UMDL architecture in order to increase speed, efficiency, and economy of searching. Both UMDL members and collection providers will participate in registering collections on the conspectus, profiling the collections as users are profiled in the user interface agent.
