Vision 2010 small compass logo About that map, . . .

The map image on the Vision 2010 home page is a scanned reproduction of a rare 1654 map of what was then the known world (at least of what was known to Europeans). We scanned it in six passes on a Hewlett-Packard 3C ScanJet and stitched these images back together using Adobe Photoshop 3.0.

Why this map at this site? Partly to keep us humble. Take a look, if you can make it out, at this cartographer's island version of the Baja peninsula. Or at the shape of the New World in general. Perhaps we should keep these images in mind as we try to plot out and piece together what lies ahead.

But we also chose this image to remind us of the necessity, even when they are inaccurate, of maps.

Many thanks to the folks in the Map Room at the top of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library at the University of Michigan. Please keep in mind that the reproduction is copyrighted by the Regents of the University of Michigan.

Take a closer look at the map.
