Description: |
Stephen Voida is a postdoctoral fellow with the GroupLab and Innovis research groups at the University of Calgary. He received his doctorate in computer science and a certificate in cognitive science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research is situated at the intersection of human-computer interaction, computer-supported cooperative work, and ubiquitous computing. The research focuses on exploring how the interfaces, interaction techniques, and enabling middleware employed in the next generation of computing systems can better respond to the critical, real-world challenges of personal information management, sharing, and long-term curation.
In this talk, Voida will present three research efforts that explore novel user-interface design in support of information work practices. With the first system, Giornata, he will discuss how the concept of activity-based computing, grounded both in empirical studies of knowledge work and theories of cognition, can lead to a re-envisioned desktop metaphor that builds on the strengths of familiar personal computer interfaces while providing capabilities more closely matched to the ways that information workers conceive of, organize, and collaborate around their day-to-day activities. Second, he will present WikiFolders, a system that adds rich-text annotation capabilities to a traditional, hierarchical file browser, providing a set of presentation-oriented tools for documenting the status of, meaning behind, and relationships among information resources as they are stored and shared. Finally, he will discuss an emerging line of research in designing user interfaces that support the information work practices involved in visualizing and collaborating around large data sets on interactive tabletop surfaces.
