Giving to SI
At the School, we know that our reputation and success are due in large part to the commitment of our alumni and friends! Your continued financial support of the School is vital to maintaining Michigan's leading role as we train information professionals to contribute and succeed in today's increasingly competitive world.
With tuition rates rising beyond the capabilities of most graduate students, it is essential to the School -- and to students -- that we provide financial assistance to committed and talented students.
Please know that each and every gift -- of any amount -- is very important to us. It is both a vote of confidence and pride in the School and a way to truly make a difference in the life of students.
In the fall of 2010, the School of Information will move to its new home in the North Quad on the central campus of the University of Michigan. While the architecture of this majestic building is reminiscent of a traditional university, with its brick and stone faade and enclosed courtyards, what we foresee happening once were inside those walls will be nothing short of revolutionary.
We are, after all, a school that embraces technology and exemplifies the future of information education and research. When fully equipped, our new location will allow us to flex our muscles, spread our wings, and showcase the power and value of the work that we do in unprecedented ways.
The new quarters for the School of Information will be the academic home for the next generations of scientists, scholars and researchers tackling the challenges of collecting, archiving, organizing, analyzing and disseminating information in the digital age. Our new facilities are ideally suited to enable us to remain a true leader in the field of information education and research. We can hardly wait.
These marvelous new resources for learning also offer numerous opportunities for donors interested in contributing to the School's future success. Classrooms, faculty and student lounges and meeting spaces will need furnishing. We have extensive audio/visual technology requirements as well. For more information about specific giving opportunities, please contact the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at (734) 647-8031 or si.alumni.relations@umich.edu.
Online Giving is Easy
Visit the University of Michigan's Michigan Difference Web site → to learn how to make a gift online using any of a variety of giving vehicles. Instructions, forms, deadlines, addresses, and contact names are provided.
Consider Annuities
A charitable gift annuity allows you to realize immediate income for yourself, a substantial income tax deduction for yourself in the first year, and future benefit to SI. The minimum age is 50; the minimum gift is $10,000.
SI Fund
Alumni and friends of the School recognize the necessity for funds that enable the dean to address unexpected or compelling needs that arise during the course of a year. These gifts also supplement special projects and events that benefit current students directly, such as the Alternative Spring Break program.
Bequests
Alumni often choose to make gifts through planned giving, such as estate plans, wills, and trusts. More detailed information about bequests → is available from the University of Michigan Office of Development. To talk to a School of Information representative about a bequest or planned giving opportunity, call (734) 763-2281.

Points to Ponder
- If your employer matches gifts, be certain to request a "matching gift form" and return it with your payment.
- Michigan taxpayers can take advantage of the Michigan Tax Credit. If you file singly you could get 50 percent of your contribution to SI, up to $100, returned to you. If you file jointly you could get up to $200 back. This tax credit is a part of the state's program for gifts to higher education and public broadcasting.
- Often major gifts come to the School through provisions made in wills or trusts. If you are considering such a gift, or wish to learn more about planned gifts, please call (734) 763-2281 or visit the University of Michigan giving Web site at www.giving.umich.edu →

"My interaction with School of Information faculty, alumni, and students is a great reminder that there's a terrific group of people who are excited to be a part of U-M.
"Please take a moment to think about how you were helped, or could have benefited, from a scholarship, and consider making a contribution that will increase scholarship support for SI students. This is an excellent way to demonstrate our commitment to SI students that as future alumni all of us have their best interests at heart and will do whatever we can to assist them during their time in Ann Arbor."
