Associate Professor's paper earns award for political methodology
(Jul 2006) Associate Professor Dragomir Radev is one of the authors of a paper awarded the Gosnell Prize for Excellence in Political Methodology.
The annual prize from the Society for Political Methodology recognizes the best work in political methodology presented at a political science conference in the previous year. The Society for Political Methodology is part of the American Political Science Association.
The winning paper was "An Automated Method of Topic-Coding Legislative Speech Over Time with Application to the 105th-108th U.S. Senate." Co-authors were Kevin M. Quinn, Burt L. Monroe, Michael Colaresi, Michael H. Crespin, and Radev. Their paper was presented at the Midwest Political Science Association Meeting this year.
The paper relates to work that Radev and others are carrying out under a National Science Foundation grant to study legislative speech using natural language processing.
The prize will be awarded at the Political Methodology Section's business meeting in Philadelphia.
