W.K. Kellogg Foundation awards $2 million to School of Information
(Oct 2006) The W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan, has awarded the School of Information a $2 million grant to establish an endowed professorship. This gift brings total support to the School through the years to $17,418,749.
The Kellogg Professorship in Community Information will support "extraordinary leadership for educating information professionals to serve society in the new age of digital information and community technology."
The School educates students at the master's and doctoral levels in the information professions.
"We are grateful to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for continuing a long history of significant leadership gifts to the School of Information," said Professor and Interim Dean C. Olivia Frost. "In fact, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation gifts were instrumental in establishing the School itself in 1996."
Frost added that "the new endowed professorship is specifically designed to further SI's commitment and effect in the realm of engagement related to community information."
The faculty of the School of Information will choose the first recipient of the professorship.
The gift continues a long tradition of support for the School by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Other major gifts have included:
In 1994, $4,395,000 to the University of Michigan to help re-invent education in the information professions. The result was the School of Information, officially chartered in 1996, which has been a national model for other academic programs in the information field.
In 1996, a second gift, for $5 million, in support of an innovative practical engagement program. PEP, as it's called, requires master's students to gain in-the-field experience in their chosen area of interest before they graduate.
In 1997, $1.5 million to establish the Alliance for Community Technology. The program assisted nonprofit organizations and community agencies understand which kinds of technology were best suited to help them carry out their missions.
The School of Information observed its 10th anniversary at an all-School celebration on October 14.
