Dean Pollack delivers upbeat State of the School address
(Mar 2008) "The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades." That's the message Dean Martha Pollack closed with in her first "State of the School" talk on March 12th.
The dean's annual report to the School cited a wide range of good news:
- MSI program continues to grow while maintaining good class size
- range of student services offered continues to expand
- new MSI specializations are in place and attracting applicants
- MSI and Ph.D. student work garners numerous accolades
- MSI and Ph.D. graduate placement records are outstanding
- LIS Summit last fall charted way forward for updating LIS curriculum
- new LIS faculty hired: Assistant Professor Tiffany Veinot
- Ph.D. program near its target size of 50 students
- $6 million in research expenditures in FY07
- STIET grant from NSF-IGERT renewed for five years
- numerous faculty honors
- budget balanced this year and next
- more than $500K in endowment gifts in last few months
Pollack also laid out priorities for the coming year. These included
- continued refinement of MSI foundations courses
- earning ALA re-accreditation
- LIS curricular updates
- strategic assessment of HCI at SI
- growth in research activity
- faculty hiring
- preparing for our North Quad move
- convening SI's new External Advisory Board
- launching the new multi-unit undergraduate program in informatics
