SI team takes second in CHI 2008 Student Design Competition
(Apr 2008) An SI team's system that used social networking tools to encourage volunteerism finished second in the CHI 2008 Conference Student Design Competition.
Assistant Professor Mark Newman reported from the Florence conference that "doGooder came in second place, just edged out by a team from Mexico. Third place went to Iowa State and fourth place to Indiana."
The doGooder project was one of three SI student team projects that made it to the semi-finals of this year's competition.
The competition charge was to develop an information system that could aid in ameliorating homelessness.
In researching organizations that serve the homeless, Team Emantis (as the doGooder design team calls itself) identified volunteerism as a key factor they could leverage.
They designed an online tool that connects volunteers with service opportunities and provides community encouragement to improve volunteer retention.

Team Emantis member Jackie Cerretani remarked on the camaraderie and the friendly yet fierce competition among the three SI teams: "[The other teams] gave us an incredible run for our money with their thoughtful and creative projects, and when doGooder was selected, their support made it seem as if our team tripled in size. At the finals, UMich cheered the loudest!"
The 2008 finish marks the third year in a row an SI team has finished among the top three in this international design competition.
As for SI's prospects for next year, Cerretani already has a message for the 2009 teams: "I've got your back!"
